Guatemala Medical Mission Trip |

Members
of Morningside Lutheran Church have been involved in medical mission
trips through HELPS for up to 10 years. Members include Karen Eberle,
Rick Eberle, Marty and Becky Jacobson and Melanie Batien. Karen, Rick
and Marty will be returning in March 2012. Karen heads the surgical
recovery area, Marty heads the kitchen staff and Rick will be installing
the ONIL stove.
A typical medical trip will include a team of approximately 70 people,
including physicians, nurses, surgical assistants, dentists and medical
and dental aides, along with the kitchen staff and interpreters. Clinic
physicians will see up to 2500 people in a week, surgeons will perform
around 125 procedures, and dentists will see up to 300 people in a week,
depending on the location of the team and the population of the area.
The stove team will install 50-60 indoor stoves and each family that
receives a stove also receives an outdoor cooker and a water filter.
Stove recipients pay a portion of the cost for their stoves, while all
medical and dental care is free to the people.
